Freshwater Flounder Brachirus panoides

aka Tonguefish, Freshwater Sole.

Size: up to 5" in the wild, much smaller in captivity  pH: 7.0 - 8.0  Temp: 74 - 82F  Origin: Thailand, Asia, and worldwide

Chemicals: Freshwater Essential found at Aquarium Additives

Food: New Life Spectrum "Small Fish Formula" "Finicky Formula" found at Fish Foods

The Tonguefish pictured here is a freshwater member of a family that occurs worldwide. Most species live in the ocean but a few smaller ones live in fresh or brackish water. These are an interesting species that will do quite well in an aquarium if given the correct environment.  Our Flounder are very healthy and will be very easy for you to care for and enjoy for a long time to come.

Since they are carnivores, the Flounder will eat all types of protein foods. They should be fed a diet of live or fresh frozen foods such as brine shrimp, and bloodworms. They are not aggressive feeders so food may have to be poured directly on top of them to make sure they get enough to eat. They will also eat tiny fish so make sure any tank mates are too large to be able to fit into their mouths.

The Tonguefish is sometimes found in the mouths of rivers where they dump into the ocean so they will do well in either fresh or brackish water tanks. They spend virtually all of their time on the bottom so special care needs to be given to where they live. To feel secure, they should be able to bury themselves which means that very fine gravel or sand is the substrate of choice. It is not unusual to see only a pair of eyes poking up through the gravel.  This fish will generally stay small in your aquarium, ours do not usually get bigger than the size of a silver dollar, and our pools are very huge, so in a smaller aquarium, they will stay small.

Medaka or Japanese rice fish is a member of the killifish family first described in 1846 and has been widely used as a aquarium fish.

They are a very small popular aquarium fish native to Southeast Asia. It is approximately 4 cm long. Its coloration varies, from brown or yellow-gold in the wild to white, creamy yellow, or orange in aquarium-bred individuals. The medaka has been a popular pet since the 17th century in Japan. It is amphidromous, meaning it moves between salt and freshwater at some point in its life. With that said, ihey may be kept in Brackish or Freshwater environments. It is found in both ocean and river habitats. The medaka is a common denizen of rice paddies in coastal Asia. The female carries her eggs attached between her anal fins.

latipes has gone into space aboard the space shuttle. It carries the distinction of having been the first vertebrate to mate in orbit. The result of the mating was a brood of healthy fry, hatched on the space shuttle Columbia in 1994.

Ranchu Goldfish Calico Variety

aka: Buffalo Head Goldfish

Size: up tp 8" in aquarium  pH: 6.5 - 7.5 Temp: 65 -75F KH: 4-20 Origin: Japan

Chemicals: Goldfish Essential found at Aquarium Chemicals

Food: New Life Spectrum "Surface Feeder Formula" and Medium Koi Pellet found at Fish Foods

The mighty Ranchu, "King" of the goldfish of Japan! The Ranchu has a short, round body and short fins with no dorsal fin. The Ranchu Goldfish resembles the Lionhead Goldfish, but the posterior dorsal contour is much more curved on the Ranchu Goldfish. One other distinguishing feature that separates the Ranchu Goldfish from the Lionhead Goldfish is the tail, which is splayed sideways with lower lobes sometimes being located nearly horizontal on the Ranchu Goldfish. The Lionhead Goldfish on the other hand, has a tail similar to the Fantail Goldfish.

The Ranchu Goldfish was created during the Meiji Period (1870-1885). The history of the Ranchu Goldfish begins in China, but it was in Japan that the breed was really developed and perfected.  There is no official standard for Ranchu Goldfish in Japan, but there are established norms that most breeders follow. They must have a good balance between the head, body and tail and a Ranchu Goldfish should always be able to swim around in a graceful and potent manner. The size of the Ranchu Goldfish is not important in shows; it is the proportions that are central when judging this fish.

The whole body and tail of the Ranchu Goldfish can be deeply red or have a reddish yellow-orange shade. There are also Ranchu Goldfishes that sports a red and white color combination, or a combination of white and reddish yellow-orange. Some Ranchu Goldfish have red scales with a white edge, while other individuals are completely white. There is also the calico coloration, which seems to be favored over self-colored fish, this is what we sell.

In Japan, a Calico Ranchu Goldfish is called Edonishiki. You can house your Ranchu Goldfish in a pond or in an aquarium, as long as you provide it with enough space. Just like the other goldfish variants, the Ranchu Goldfish produces quite a lot of waste products and a small aquarium will soon suffer from poor water quality even with strong filtering. Too little space will also hamper the development of your Ranchu Goldfish and you will never see it reach its full potential. It will eat almost anything you feed it, and you should provide your Ranchu Goldfish with a varied diet to ensure that it gets all necessary nutrients. Flake food and pellets can be combined with fresh or frozen life foods. Also include vegetables in the diet, such as cucumber, lettuce and zucchini. Remember that all goldfish types are cold blooded, so the metabolism of your Ranchu Goldfish will depend on the water temperature. You must therefore adjust the amount of food according to seasonal temperature variations.

Japan has huge goldfish Ranchu competitions. The ranchus are shown in shallow bowls and judged from the top, unlike the Chinese goldfish breeders who judge their goldfish Ranchu from the side. Ranchu breeders come from all over the country with to compete for the title of Champion Goldfish Ranchu Breeder. The Edo Nishiki is a calico Ranchu first produced in Tokyo in 1951 by crossing a Ranchu with an Azuma Nishiki.  If you are looking for a great goldfish to collect, the "Goldfish King of Japan" is for you.

Senegal Dragonfin Bichir

Polypterus senegalus

a.k.a. Cuvier Bichir, Dragonfin Bicher or Gray Bichir

Size: up to 12"  pH: 6.5 - 7.5 Temp: 77 -80F Origin: Streams and Rivers of the African Congo Basin

Chemicals: Freshwater Essential found at Aquarium Additives

Food: Live foods like worms and shrimp, some frozen foods and New Life Spectrum "Community Formula" and "Finicky Formula" found at Fish Foods

The Senegal Bichir is a member of the Polypteridae, or Lobe-Finned Pike family.  As with other members of the primitive Polypteridae family, this fish has the ability to survive out of water because it has a lung-like paired swim bladder and gills to help it breath.  It can spend short periods of time on land, but must return quickly back to its water to respirate.

This fish will do best in a large "oddball" aquarium with other large, passive fish.  It is not usually aggressive toward tank mates as long as there are plenty of places for this fish to hide, like rocks, caves, and crevices.  We keep this fish in a pool with some small plecos, puffers, and snails and seem to be a very sweet and active fish that always come and "visit" us when we are close.  Would be good for most any community tanks.  Sometimes seem to disappear for a couple days then comes out and is very active toward the front of the glass.
